Tamil OTT releases this week: which app gets what, and how to track it
Every week a handful of Tamil films and series land on streaming, spread across half a dozen apps. Most arrive on a Thursday night or Friday, and big theatrical releases usually reach OTT about four weeks after they open in cinemas. Which apps get new Tamil releases
Streaming rights are sold film by film, so no single app gets everything. Big-star theatrical films usually go to Prime Video, Netflix, JioHotstar or ZEE5, whichever bought the rights. Sun NXT and aha are Tamil-first apps with their own films, shows and originals. SonyLIV picks up a smaller number of Tamil and dubbed titles. How long Tamil films take to reach OTT
In April 2026 the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council kept a four-week window between a film's theatrical release and its streaming premiere. Theatre owners have pushed for eight weeks, and the dispute was still open in late August 2026 after the state government stepped in, so check the announcement for each big release rather than assuming. Hindi-dubbed versions of Tamil films follow the multiplex chains' eight-week rule for Hindi releases, which is why the Tamil original often streams a month before its Hindi dub.
In practice, a film that opens in cinemas this Friday will usually be on an app about a month later, and the platform announces the date a week or two ahead.
How to track Tamil OTT releases each week
A two-minute routine on Thursday evening covers most weeks:
- 1Open JustWatch India and check the “new” page for each app you pay for, for example justwatch.com/in/provider/netflix/new.
- 2Look at each app’s Coming Soon or New Releases row. Tamil titles show up there once you set Tamil as a content language.
- 3Follow the official social accounts of the apps and of the film’s production house; streaming dates are usually announced a week or two before.
- 4For a single film, search its title on JustWatch. It shows which app has it, or that it has not streamed yet.
- 5Add titles to your watchlist in the app so you get a notification on release day.
The cheapest way to get each app
You don't need all seven. Pick the one or two apps that bought the films you want, take the cheapest plan that fits how you watch, and rotate when the next film lands somewhere else. Annual plans are cheapest per month, but monthly plans make rotating easy. ZEE5's single-language Tamil pack is one of the cheapest ways in. Sun NXT and aha are not shown because their current official prices could not be verified; check them in each app.

Watching on a TV without paying for every app
The cheapest plans above are phone-only, and Prime Lite is limited to one device. Watching on a TV means Netflix Basic or higher, JioHotstar Super or higher, full Prime or LIV Premium. Sharing one of those with family or flatmates is where the savings are: JioHotstar Premium allows four devices, so a Subspace group can bring it to around ₹75 a month each.
