SBI FASTag recharge and balance check: all the options
An SBI FASTag works like a prepaid wallet: you top it up, and each toll plaza deducts from it. You can recharge it in four places: SBI's own FASTag portal, the YONO SBI app, any UPI app, or a Bharat BillPay app such as Subspace. You can check the balance in almost as many ways. Since February 2025, NPCI's rules decline toll payments from tags that were low on balance or blacklisted for a while before you reached the plaza, and the penalty is double toll, so topping up after you join the queue may be too late. Ways to recharge an SBI FASTag
SBI lists these channels on its NETC FASTag page. All of them credit the same tag wallet, so pick the one you already use.

Recharge SBI FASTag on Subspace
Subspace connects to SBI’s FASTag through Bharat BillPay, so you only need the vehicle number the tag is linked to.
- 1Open the Subspace app and choose Bill payments, then FASTag.
- 2Select State Bank of India as the issuer.
- 3Enter your vehicle registration number. Check the name and current balance if the app shows them.
- 4Enter the amount and pay by UPI, card or net banking.
- 5Keep the BBPS reference number until the top-up shows in your SBI FASTag account.
SBI FASTag balance check
The quickest checks are the ones you already have:
- SMS from SBI after each toll deduction shows the remaining balance.
- SBI FASTag portal or YONO: log in to see the balance and transaction history.
- Bharat BillPay apps: when you enter your vehicle number to recharge, many issuers, including SBI, return the current balance before you pay.
- My FASTag app (from IHMCL): shows the wallet balance by vehicle number.
NPCI's online FASTag status check tells you whether a tag is active or blacklisted. It isn't a balance check.
Why to recharge before you leave home
Under NPCI rules that took effect on 17 February 2025, a toll payment is declined if your tag was low on balance, blacklisted or hotlisted for more than 60 minutes before the plaza reads it and is still in that state 10 minutes after. The vehicle then pays double toll. Reports say a recharge within 10 minutes of the read can get the extra amount refunded, but recharging at the plaza is cutting it fine.
A simple rule: check the balance the night before a highway drive and top up enough for the whole route. The chart shows how quickly a ₹1,000 balance goes at different toll values.

For tag, balance or wrong-deduction issues, contact SBI FASTag customer care on 1800 11 0018 or email [email protected]. For a wrong toll deduction, note NPCI's rule: chargeback requests can only be raised after a 15-day cooling period, and earlier ones are rejected automatically.
