Checking FASTag balance using your vehicle number

Your FASTag balance is held by the bank that issued the tag, so the most reliable check is with that bank: its app, its portal or the SMS it sends after each toll. If all you have is the vehicle number, two routes work for most tags. One is a Bharat BillPay app, which fetches the balance when you start a recharge. The other is IHMCL's My FASTag app. NPCI's online lookup is often mistaken for a balance check, but it only shows whether the tag is active or blacklisted. This page lists every method, what each one needs and shows, and why checking before a highway drive matters more since NPCI's 2025 rules on low-balance tags.

Check your balance on Subspace with the vehicle number

For many issuers, the recharge screen shows your current balance before you pay anything. You can stop there if you only wanted to check.

  1. 1Open the Subspace app and choose Bill payments, then FASTag.
  2. 2Select the bank that issued your tag. It is printed on the tag and on your SMS alerts.
  3. 3Enter the vehicle registration number.
  4. 4Read the balance and customer name the app fetches. If your issuer doesn’t return a balance, use one of the other methods below.
  5. 5Top up if needed, or close the screen without paying.

Every way to check a FASTag balance

Which method suits you depends on what you have to hand. If you have only the vehicle number, use a BBPS app or the My FASTag app. If you have the bank login, the issuer's app or portal gives you the full transaction history as well.

The missed-call number that circulates online, +91-8884333331, was announced in 2020 for tags linked to the NHAI prepaid wallet. It doesn't work for bank-issued tags. We couldn't verify the SMS-code methods posted on some sites, so they aren't listed.

Why to check before a highway drive

NPCI's rules from 17 February 2025 look at your tag's status before you reach the plaza. If the tag was low on balance or blacklisted for more than 60 minutes before the reader scans it, and still is 10 minutes after, the toll is declined and you pay double. So the balance that matters is the one you leave home with.

Plan for the whole route, not the first plaza. The chart shows how a ₹500 top-up drains on a route with five plazas at ₹95 each. By the last one you're down to ₹25, and one more plaza would be declined.

If the balance looks wrong

First compare the balance with the SMS alerts from your bank; each one shows the deduction and plaza. For a wrong or double deduction, contact the issuing bank. NPCI requires a 15-day cooling period before a chargeback can be filed, and requests raised earlier are rejected automatically. If the NPCI lookup shows your tag as blacklisted, the usual causes are a low balance, an incomplete KYC or a tag not linked to the vehicle number; your issuer can tell you which. For plaza issues, call NHAI on 1033. Bank-specific guides: SBI FASTag and Airtel FASTag.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check my FASTag balance with just the vehicle number?

Yes, for most tags. Enter the vehicle number in a Bharat BillPay app such as Subspace, which fetches the balance for many issuers, or use the IHMCL My FASTag app.

Does the NPCI FASTag website show my balance?

No. NPCI’s NETC FASTag lookup shows whether a tag is active or blacklisted. Use your bank, a BBPS app or the My FASTag app for the balance.

Is there a missed call number for FASTag balance?

+91-8884333331 was announced for tags linked to the NHAI prepaid wallet. Bank-issued tags need the bank’s app, SMS alerts or a BBPS app instead.

Why does my FASTag show as blacklisted?

Common reasons are a low or zero balance, incomplete KYC, or a tag not linked to the vehicle registration. Recharge first, then ask your issuing bank if the status doesn’t clear.

How much balance should I keep on my FASTag?

Enough for every plaza on your planned route, plus a margin. A tag that is low for over an hour before a plaza can be declined, which costs double toll.

Does checking my FASTag balance on Subspace cost anything?

No. The balance appears on the recharge screen for supported issuers; you only pay if you choose to top up.
