How to check a gift card balance, brand by brand

There's no single place to check every gift card balance in India. Each brand handles it differently. Some cards are loaded into a wallet, so you check the wallet in the brand's app. Others keep the balance on the card itself, and you look it up with the card number and PIN on the brand's website. A few use an SMS check. Before you look anything up, it helps to know which number on your card is which: the gift card number, the PIN and, for some brands, a single redeem code. This guide explains those, lists the balance-check method for popular brands, and covers what to do when a balance looks wrong.

Most Indian brand e-gift cards, including many issued by Pine Labs, come as a 16-digit card number plus a 6-digit PIN. The number identifies the card; the PIN unlocks the value. Anyone with both can spend the card, so treat the PIN like an ATM PIN and never share it with someone who calls or messages you about it.

Some brands use a single redeem code instead. Amazon Pay Gift Cards use a 14-character claim code, and Uber gift cards use a gift code entered without spaces. Physical cards may also print a longer reference or serial number; that's for customer support and isn't what you enter to redeem.

Balance check by brand

Wallet-style cards show the balance only after you load them. Card-style balances can be checked before you spend, which is useful when you receive a card as a gift.

Check the expiry while you check the balance

A balance is only useful until the card expires, and validity varies widely by brand. Domino's e-gift cards last 180 days, Tanishq e-gift cards six months from activation, most others a year, and Pine Labs-issued Zomato cards four years. Note the expiry the day you receive a card, and spend short-validity cards first.

Also check whether the card is one-time use. Westside, Croma, Kalyan, Malabar, PVR and KFC vouchers are spent in a single bill, and whatever isn't used is lost. On those cards the balance you see before shopping is the full value, so plan a purchase that uses all of it.

If the balance looks wrong

Most balance problems have a simple cause. Work through these before assuming fraud.

1Confirm you entered the card number and PIN, not a reference or serial number printed on the card.
2Check the account’s transaction history; a family member may have used the same login or card.
3For wallet-style cards, remember the balance moved into the wallet when you added it and won’t show on the card any more.
4Contact the brand’s support with the card number and order details. For cards bought on Subspace, keep your Subspace order ID handy.
5If you were tricked into sharing a PIN or code, call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 and report it at cybercrime.gov.in.

What is a gift card number?

It is the identifier printed or emailed with your card, usually 16 digits for Indian brand e-gift cards. It is used with a 6-digit PIN to redeem the card or check its balance.

What is a gift card redeem code?

Some brands use one code instead of a number and PIN. Amazon Pay Gift Cards, for example, have a 14-character claim code that you enter under Add Gift Card.

Can I check a gift card balance without the PIN?

For most card-style balances, no. Brands such as Myntra and Kalyan Jewellers ask for both the card number and PIN. Tanishq’s SMS check uses the card number.

Why can’t I see my balance on the brand’s website?

If you already added the card to a wallet, such as AJIO Wallet, CLiQ Cash, Zomato Money or Uber Cash, the balance now shows in that wallet inside your account.

Is it safe to check a gift card balance on third-party sites?

Use the brand’s own website or app. Third-party balance checkers can capture your card number and PIN and spend the card.

Where do I find the code for a gift card bought on Subspace?

Open Order history in your Subspace profile. Each card’s code, or number and PIN, is listed there with a copy button.
