Refer & earn apps: how referral rewards work and which to trust
Almost every app in India now has a refer and earn button: payment apps, brokers, shopping apps, bill-pay apps and subscription apps. The idea is simple. An app would otherwise spend money on ads to find a new user, so it pays part of that to you and your friend instead. The details are where people get disappointed. Headlines like “refer and earn ₹1,000” are usually caps, the friend often has to complete a first payment or KYC within a few days, and rewards may arrive as scratch cards, coupons or points instead of cash. This guide explains how referral programmes work, the main types of apps that run them, how to judge an offer before you spam your contacts, the scams to avoid, and how Subspace’s referral gives you and your friend a discount.

- Cashback, coupons or points

- Pay-to-join schemes
How a referral programme works
Nearly every legitimate programme follows the same five steps. What differs between apps is the qualifying action in step 3 and the form of the reward in step 5.
- 1You copy your personal referral link or code from the app’s Refer & Earn or Invite screen.
- 2Your friend installs the app through that link, or enters your code at sign-up. Installing first and adding the code later often doesn’t count.
- 3Your friend completes the qualifying action within the offer window: a first UPI payment, a first order, a minimum spend, opening and funding an account, or completing KYC.
- 4The app checks the referral for fraud, such as duplicate devices, self-referrals or fake accounts. This can take a few days.
- 5The reward is credited to one or both of you as cashback, wallet or gift-card balance, a coupon, points or a discount, as stated in the offer terms.
Types of referral apps and what they pay
“Refer and earn apps list” articles go stale within weeks because amounts change constantly. It is more useful to know how each category behaves.
| Category | What usually triggers the reward | How it is usually paid | KYC |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPI payment apps | Friend’s first UPI payment, often above a minimum amount | Cashback to bank, scratch card or gift-card balance | Bank account already KYC-verified; app may ask for more |
| Stock broking and demat apps | Friend opens and funds an account, sometimes a first trade | Cash, brokerage credit or vouchers | Full KYC is mandatory under SEBI rules |
| Shopping and food delivery | Friend’s first order above a set value | Coupons or app credits | Usually none |
| Bill-pay and subscription apps (including Subspace) | Friend signs up and transacts | Discounts or credits on the next purchase | Depends on the product |
| Credit cards and loans | Friend’s card or loan is approved and used | Points, vouchers or cash | Full KYC and credit check |
What “refer and earn ₹500” or “₹1,000” usually means
Big round numbers are almost always the most you can earn, not what one referral pays. A typical structure is a fixed reward per friend who completes the qualifying action, up to a monthly or yearly cap. Some apps add milestone bonuses, and some pay a random scratch-card amount “up to” the headline figure.
So the real value depends on how many of your friends actually install through your link and complete the action in time. The chart shows one made-up example of how a “₹1,000” headline plays out.
Illustrative only, not any specific app. Assumes a flat ₹100 per qualifying referral and a ₹1,000 cap. Real offers vary and change often.
| 2 friends qualify | ₹200 |
|---|---|
| 5 friends qualify | ₹500 |
| All 10 qualify | ₹1,000 |
How to judge a referral offer
Before you share a link with your family WhatsApp group, open the offer’s terms and check:
- What your friend must do, and by when. A first payment within a few days is common.
- Who gets rewarded. Only you, only your friend, or both.
- The cap. Per referral, per month and per year.
- The form of the reward. Cash in your bank is worth more than a coupon you may never use or points that expire.
- KYC. Whether you or your friend must verify identity before the reward is released.
- Whether the offer can be withdrawn. Almost all programmes reserve the right to change or end the offer at any time.
The highest-paying referral apps are usually brokers, credit cards and other financial products, because each new customer is worth more to them. They also ask the most of your friend, including full KYC.
Red flags: when “refer and earn” is a scam
- You have to pay to join. A “registration”, “activation” or “upgrade” fee before you can earn is the clearest sign of a scam. Schemes that pay you mainly from new members’ joining money are money-circulation schemes, banned under the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act, 1978.
- WhatsApp or Telegram “earning” groups. They start by paying small amounts for liking videos or rating hotels, then ask you to deposit money to unlock bigger tasks. The deposits are never returned.
- Real-money gaming referral offers. Online money games are banned under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, so apps still promoting them are not legitimate.
- APK downloads and requests for your UPI PIN or OTP. Genuine apps are on the Play Store or App Store, and you never need a UPI PIN to receive money.
If you have lost money, call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or report it at cybercrime.gov.in, and inform your bank immediately.
How Subspace refer and earn works
Subspace is an app for sharing subscription costs, buying discounted gift cards, renting gadgets and paying bills. Its referral is simple: when your friend joins through your link, you both get a discount. The exact percentage and cap depend on the campaign running at the time, and the app shows the current offer on its referral screen.
Share your personal link from the app. When a friend opens it on their phone, it takes them to the Subspace app, or to the Play Store or App Store if they don’t have it yet, with your referral attached. There is nothing to pay to take part. See also refer and earn without KYC and the best cashback UPI apps.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best refer and earn app?
There is no single best one, because offers change every few weeks. The best refer and earn app for you is one you or your friends would use anyway, that pays in a form you value (cash over coupons), and that has clear terms. Never choose an app that asks you to pay to join.
Is “refer and earn ₹1,000” real?
Sometimes, but it is usually a cap. You earn a smaller amount per friend who completes the qualifying action, up to that limit. Read the terms to see what each referral actually pays and when.
Which app pays the highest referral amount?
Financial products such as brokers and credit cards usually pay the most per referral, because each customer is valuable to them. They also require your friend to complete full KYC and often fund an account. Amounts change frequently, so check the app’s current terms.
Do I need KYC to earn referral money?
For cash rewards, usually yes at some point. UPI payouts go to a bank account that is already KYC-verified, and brokers require full KYC by law. Coupons, credits and discounts often need no KYC.
What are share and earn or invite and earn apps?
They are the same thing as refer and earn apps: you share an invite link, and you are rewarded when someone joins and completes an action. Treat any “share and earn” app that asks for an upfront fee as a scam.
Is referral income taxable?
Cash rewards and cashback can count as income for tax purposes. If you earn significant amounts through referrals, keep records and check with a tax professional.
How does Subspace refer and earn work?
Share your referral link from the Subspace app. When your friend joins through it, you both get a discount. The current percentage and cap are shown in the app and vary by campaign.
Are WhatsApp earning groups safe?
No. Groups that pay for likes or reviews and then ask for deposits to unlock bigger tasks are a common scam. Report them on 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in.
