YouTube Premium for students: who qualifies and how to sign up
If you are enrolled at a college or university in India, the YouTube Premium student plan costs ₹89 a month, against ₹149 for the regular Individual plan. You get the full Premium package: no ads, background play, downloads and YouTube Music Premium. Students who only want music can take YouTube Music Premium Student at ₹59. The catch is verification. Google checks enrolment through SheerID, you re-verify every year, and the student discount lasts up to four consecutive years. Who qualifies for the YouTube student plan
Google's help centre sets three conditions, and India is on its list of student-plan countries:
- You are enrolled at a higher-education institution that SheerID, Google's verification partner, recognises. School students in Classes 1 to 12 don't qualify.
- You pass SheerID's verification, and you re-verify each year.
- You stay within four consecutive years on the student plan.
If you already pay for YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium, you have to cancel that membership before you can start the student plan. The easiest way to find out whether your college is covered is to search for it on the SheerID form during sign-up.
How to sign up and verify
Verification is usually instant when SheerID can match your college records. If it asks for a document, upload one that shows your name, your college and a current date.
- 1Open YouTube's Premium page in the app or browser and choose the Student plan.
- 2Search for your college on the SheerID form. If it does not appear, the student plan is not available for it.
- 3Upload proof if asked, such as a dated college ID card or fee receipt.
- 4Once verified, add a payment method and start the membership.
- 5Re-verify when YouTube asks each year to keep the student price.
Student price vs every other way to pay
The student plan saves you about 40% on the Individual price, and it beats the 12-month prepaid plan too. Family split six ways is cheaper still, but only if you live with five other people who want Premium, since Family members must share the manager's address. For music alone, YouTube Music Student is the cheapest option of all.

If you do not qualify
If your college isn't recognised, or you are between courses, you still have good options:
- Premium Lite costs the same as the student plan and removes ads from most non-music videos, though not from music or Shorts.
- Family, if you live with family members who want Premium, is the cheapest per head.
