Netflix household and “too many devices” messages: what to do
Netflix shows two different blocks, and they have different causes. "Too many people are using your account right now" means your plan's limit on screens streaming at the same time has been reached: one screen on Mobile and Basic, two on Standard, four on Premium. "Your device isn't part of the Netflix Household for this account" means Netflix couldn't link the device to the home where the account is mainly used, because a Netflix account is meant for one household. This page explains both messages in Netflix's own terms, the fixes Netflix suggests, what to do when you are travelling, and the legitimate ways to cut what you pay for Netflix.

Netflix messages and what each one means
Match the wording on your screen to the table. The first is about how many screens are playing; the others are about where the device is.
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Too many people are using your account right now" (or "in use on another device" / "on too many devices") | Your plan’s limit on screens streaming at once is reached | Stop Netflix on another device and wait 5–10 minutes, or upgrade your plan |
| "Your TV isn’t part of the Netflix Household for this account" | Netflix can’t link the TV to your household | At home, choose Update Netflix Household; away, choose I’m Traveling |
| "Your device isn’t part of the Netflix Household" (phone or computer) | The device isn’t linked to your household | Join the same Wi-Fi as a TV in your household, or choose Watch Temporarily |
| "You can’t request any more codes today" | That TV has hit its limit on temporary codes | Try again later, ideally from your home Wi-Fi |
Fixing “too many devices”
This message is about simultaneous streams, not about how many devices are signed in. Your plan decides the limit, and Netflix's Change Plan page shows yours.
- 1Check which devices recently watched, from the access and devices section of your Netflix account.
- 2Stop playback or close Netflix on one of the other devices.
- 3Wait 5 to 10 minutes; Netflix says it can take that long to free the stream.
- 4If you see devices you don’t recognise, sign them out and change your password.
- 5If your household regularly needs more screens, upgrade: Standard allows two, Premium four.

Fixing “not part of your Netflix Household”
A Netflix Household is the set of devices connected to the internet at the main place you watch. Netflix sets it using a TV, so most fixes start there. Make sure the account's email address is valid, because Netflix may hide the update option until account issues are fixed.
- 1On the TV at home, choose Update Netflix Household from the message, or from the Get Help or Settings menu.
- 2On a phone or laptop, connect to the same Wi-Fi as a TV or streaming device in your household, then restart the app or refresh the site.
- 3If you don’t have a TV, check your recently active devices and sign out any you don’t recognise.
Watching Netflix while travelling
Away from home, you can verify a device temporarily. On a TV, choose I'm Traveling; on a phone or computer, choose Watch Temporarily, using a non-Kids profile. Netflix sends a link to the account owner's email, or a text if there is no email on file. The link shows a 4-digit code to enter on the device.
The rules: codes expire after 15 minutes, several wrong attempts block the device for 24 hours, and each TV can request only a limited number of codes. To avoid interruptions on trips, Netflix recommends opening the app on your household Wi-Fi at least once a month.
What Netflix’s sharing rules mean, and cheaper legal options
Netflix's position is clear: you may not share an account outside your household, and people outside it need their own account. Its help centre mentions an "extra member" option in general terms, but the India plans page lists no extra member price, so don't count on one.
Legitimate ways to pay less: choose the plan your household actually needs (see Netflix plans in India), use Mobile or Basic if you watch alone, and if three or four people at home each want their own screen, take Premium and split its cost among them. Subspace Netflix groups handle that split, with the per-member price in the live table on this page; Netflix's household rule still applies, so they suit people who live together.
