Netflix or Amazon Prime: which subscription suits you better

Netflix and Amazon Prime are priced and built so differently that the cheaper one depends entirely on how you use them. Amazon Prime is a shopping membership with Prime Video, Prime Music and fast delivery bundled in, at ₹1,499 a year or ₹299 a month. Since 17 June 2025, Prime Video shows ads unless you pay extra for the ad-free add-on. Netflix is streaming only, has no ads on any Indian plan and bills monthly, from ₹149 for a single phone up to ₹649 for four 4K screens. This page puts the official prices, screen limits and catalogue strengths side by side so you can decide which one to keep, or whether you need both.

Plans and prices side by side

Netflix sells four plans and only bills monthly; it has no annual or multi-month option in India. Amazon sells Prime monthly or yearly, plus a cheaper Prime Lite that keeps the delivery benefits but limits Prime Video to one device in HD. Every Netflix plan is ad-free. Every Prime plan shows ads on Prime Video, and only full Prime members can buy the ad-free add-on; Lite members have to upgrade first.

What a full year costs

Because Netflix is monthly only, its yearly cost is twelve monthly bills. Prime’s yearly plan works out far cheaper than paying ₹299 every month, and even Prime plus the ad-free add-on costs less a year than Netflix Basic. Netflix Mobile is the cheapest way to get ad-free streaming, but it only works on one phone or tablet at a time and can’t cast to a TV.

Cost for 12 months, official India prices

Netflix = monthly price × 12. Prime + ad-free = yearly Prime plus the yearly ad-free add-on. Prices as of 12 Oct 2026.

Cost for 12 months, official India prices
Prime Lite₹799
Prime (yearly)₹1,499
Prime + ad-free (yearly)₹2,198
Netflix Mobile₹1,788
Netflix Basic₹2,388
Netflix Standard₹5,988

Catalogue: where each one is stronger

Netflix is the stronger pick for international originals: Korean dramas, anime, documentaries, true-crime series and English-language shows, plus a steady run of Hindi and South Indian originals. Its library is built around series you binge.

Prime Video leans harder on Indian films. Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada releases often land there a few weeks after their theatrical run, alongside Amazon Originals and a store where you can rent or buy titles outside the membership. If your household watches mostly regional cinema, Prime usually has more of it.

Catalogues change every week, so search for three or four titles you actually want before paying. The trending grid on this page shows what is popular right now.

Ads, devices and sharing rules

Prime Video has shown ads to standard Prime members in India since 17 June 2025. The ad-free add-on removes them from on-demand films and shows, but Amazon says some content, such as TV and free ad-supported programming, keeps its ads. Prime allows five devices including two TVs; Lite allows one device, mobile or TV.

Netflix ties an account to one household, meaning the devices on your home internet connection. Its plans differ mainly by screens and picture quality, so a family of four watching on separate TVs needs Premium.

Which one to pick

  • You shop on Amazon at least once a month: take Prime. Free fast delivery alone can pay for it, and Prime Video comes along.
  • You hate ads and watch mostly international series: Netflix Standard or Premium.
  • One person, phone only, tight budget: Netflix Mobile or Prime Lite. Lite also covers a TV, Mobile doesn’t.
  • Big family on several TVs: Prime (five devices) is the budget route; Netflix Premium is the ad-free route.
  • You want both: Prime yearly plus Netflix Basic still costs less than Netflix Premium alone.

To cut the Prime bill further, Subspace sells discounted Amazon Prime vouchers. See also Prime Lite vs Prime and Netflix plans in India.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Netflix or Amazon Prime?

For value, Amazon Prime wins: ₹1,499 a year covers Prime Video on five devices plus delivery and music benefits. For an ad-free experience and international originals, Netflix is better. Prime Video now shows ads unless you add the ad-free add-on.

Which is best for Indian movies, Netflix or Amazon Prime?

Prime Video generally carries more recent Indian films across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, often a few weeks after theatres. Netflix has fewer licensed films but a strong slate of Indian original series.

Does Amazon Prime Video have ads now?

Yes. Since 17 June 2025, Prime members in India see ads on Prime Video. Full Prime members can remove most of them with the ad-free add-on at ₹129/month or ₹699/year. Prime Lite members can’t buy it without upgrading.

Is Netflix or Amazon Prime cheaper per year?

Amazon Prime. The yearly plan is ₹1,499, while twelve months of the cheapest Netflix plan, Mobile at ₹149/month, cost more than that. Netflix has no yearly plan.

Netflix or Amazon Prime for a family with two TVs?

Prime covers up to five devices including two TVs at once. On Netflix you need Standard (₹499/month) for two screens or Premium (₹649/month) for four, and everyone must be part of the same household.

Can I pay less for Amazon Prime?

Yes. Take the yearly plan, or buy a discounted Amazon Prime voucher on Subspace and redeem it on your Amazon account. Prime Lite at ₹799/year is cheaper if one screen in HD is enough.
