Amazon Prime Lite vs Prime: what the cheaper plan leaves out

Amazon now sells three yearly memberships in India, and the one most people weigh up is Prime Lite at ₹799 a year against full Prime at ₹1,499 a year (or ₹299 a month). The surprise in Amazon’s own comparison table is that the shopping side is identical: Lite gets the same free fast delivery, same-day and one-day delivery, Prime-only deals and early access to sales. What you give up is entertainment. Lite limits Prime Video to one screen in 720p with ads you can’t remove, and it leaves out Prime Music, Prime Reading and Amazon Luna. What a year costs on each plan

Paying monthly for Prime is the most expensive way to get it: twelve months at ₹299 costs more than twice the yearly plan. If you want Prime Video without ads, the yearly add-on at ₹699 sits on top of full Prime only.

Where Prime Lite falls short

Lite is built for one person on one screen. The limits that catch people out:

One device at a time. If someone at home is watching on the TV, you can’t watch on your phone.
Mobile or TV only. Laptops and browsers are listed for full Prime, not Lite.
720p and ads, permanently. Amazon’s FAQ says Lite members must upgrade to Prime before they can buy ad-free.
No Prime Music or Prime Reading. If you use Amazon Music for your daily playlists, Lite removes it.

None of this matters if you mainly buy things on Amazon and watch an occasional film on your phone.

A quick example: a couple who order groceries and household items every week but watch Prime Video together once or twice a month lose almost nothing on Lite. A family where the kids watch cartoons on a tablet while a parent watches cricket highlights on the TV will hit the one-device limit within days and should take full Prime.

Upgrading or cancelling

Amazon lets you move up mid-membership, so starting small is low-risk.

1To upgrade, go to amazon.in/prime while signed in. Amazon allows Shopping Edition to Lite or Prime, and Lite to Prime, at any time during your membership.
2Pick the plan you want and pay the amount shown at checkout.
3To stop renewal, open amazon.in/mc and turn off auto-renewal, or cancel the membership there if you signed up directly with Amazon.
4If you joined through a partner such as a telecom or bank offer, change auto-renewal with that partner instead.

Which plan to buy

Shopping only: Shopping Edition. You get every delivery and deal benefit for the lowest price.
One person, occasional films on a phone or TV: Prime Lite.
More than one viewer, a 4K TV, Amazon Music or ad-free viewing: full Prime, on the yearly plan.
