Amazon Prime for students in India: the youth offer and real savings

Amazon does not sell a Prime Student plan in India, and its current Prime plans page lists no student or youth offer. In past years Amazon ran a Prime Youth Offer for 18 to 24-year-olds, which gave back about half the membership fee as cashback after an age check with a government ID and a selfie. It isn't on Amazon's plans page now, so check amazon.in/youthoffer before counting on it. Students still have real ways to pay less: Prime Lite at ₹799 a year, Shopping Edition at ₹399, the yearly plan instead of monthly, and discounted Prime vouchers on Subspace. Here is how each one works and which suits a student budget.

Amazon Prime student and youth offers in India

Not as a dedicated plan. Amazon's India offer has been for 18 to 24-year-olds, whether or not they study:

2019 launch: customers aged 18 to 24 got 50% cashback on an annual Prime membership.
Later versions: the youth offer ran as a cashback on Prime plans, claimed after joining by verifying your age with one government ID and a real-time selfie. Existing Prime members, and accounts that had Prime before, were excluded under the terms reported in 2021.
Now: Amazon's Prime plans page lists no youth offer. The offer page at amazon.in/youthoffer is the place to check whether a new round is live.

So if you are 18 to 24, check that page before buying. If nothing is running, the options below are the real savings.

The cheapest real ways for a student to get Prime

Start from what you actually use. If you mostly want fast delivery for books, gadgets and hostel supplies, Shopping Edition is enough. If you watch Prime Video on your phone, Lite covers it at about half the yearly Prime price. Full Prime only earns its price if you stream on a TV or share screens.

What each option costs per month

Spread over twelve months, Shopping Edition costs less than ₹10 a week, Lite well under ₹100 a month, and yearly Prime less than half of what monthly Prime costs. Monthly Prime is the most expensive way to pay unless you only need it for one sale.

“Free Amazon Prime for students”: what to ignore

Amazon doesn't list any free Prime plan for students in India. Websites and Telegram channels promising one usually want your Amazon login, an OTP or an app install. Never share an OTP or password for a "free Prime" offer: Amazon's real offers appear on amazon.in itself, at checkout or on the youth offer page.

What does lower the price is legitimate: buying a discounted Prime voucher on Subspace and redeeming it on your own account, choosing Lite or Shopping Edition, and upgrading later if you need more. Amazon lets you move from Shopping Edition to Lite or Prime, or from Lite to Prime, partway through a membership.

Making Prime work on a student budget

Buy yearly, not monthly, if you will use Prime for more than five months.
Time a monthly plan for a single big sale if that is all you need.
Start with Lite or Shopping Edition and upgrade only if you find yourself missing something.
Expect ads: Prime Video shows ads by default on both tiers that include it, and Lite can't remove them.
